Northern Ireland Legal Context
Under the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 and the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006, duty holders must maintain fire safety measures—including alarm systems and associated information—in efficient working order and good repair. A zone plan is a practical way to meet those duties by enabling safe means of escape and prompt response.
What a Compliant Zone Map Should Include
- Clear zone boundaries that match the panel’s zone labels/numbers.
- Entrances/exits and circulation routes (stairs, corridors).
- Orientation cues (e.g., correct orientation to viewer; a “You Are Here” marker is widely used though not explicitly
mandated in BS text). - Readability & simplicity: legible scale, minimal clutter, optional colour-coding for zones without overcomplication.
- Location: permanently displayed on or adjacent to each CIE or repeater panel and kept up-to-date after any layout/system changes.
