County Down gas engineer found guilty of gas safety breaches

In a recent legal proceeding, the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) has effectively prosecuted Ian Campbell, a gas engineer from County Down operating as M.G.B Gas and Building Services, for health and safety violations.

Outcome of the Prosecution:
Ian Campbell received a sentence today at Newtownards Magistrates Court for three health and safety infractions. He was given a four-month suspended sentence for each charge, to be suspended for three years, with all sentences to run concurrently.

Background of the Case:
The prosecution stemmed from an incident where Ian Campbell replaced a gas boiler in Bangor, County Down, in November 2022 without being listed on the Gas Safe Register. The Gas Safe Register later deemed the installation ‘at risk,’ indicating a potential threat to life or property. Registration with the Gas Safe Register is mandatory for all gas engineers before engaging in any gas-related work.

Further Findings:
The investigation revealed that despite a prohibition notice served in February 2023 by an HSENI Inspector, Ian Campbell persisted in performing unregistered gas work.

Inspector’s Statement:
HSENI Inspector Kiara Blackburn commented, “Ian Campbell conducted gas work without the necessary registration. This not only contravenes gas safety regulations but also endangers the public, including homeowners and renters, with potentially hazardous gas setups.”

Additional Penalties:
Today, Ian Campbell was also mandated to compensate the homeowner of the Bangor residence with £1,750 and was handed additional one-month suspended sentences for each of two prior health and safety charges from a court hearing on 12 April 2022. These charges were also related to unsafe gas work.

Importance of the Gas Safe Register:
The Gas Safe Register is crucial for maintaining gas safety standards. All gas businesses and engineers are required to be registered to legally conduct gas work.
