Keep Your Staff Safe – Tyrone Firm Fined Following Employee Injury

A County Tyrone engineering company, was fined £25,000 after a Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) investigation revealed significant safety failures. The case, heard at Craigavon Crown Court, concerned a 2022 incident where an employee suffered serious hand injuries while using an automatic lathe.

The injuries occurred during the manual application of emery cloth to remove rust from a metal component in the lathe. Investigation findings highlighted that the lathe’s interlocking safety doors had been bypassed, allowing operation with the doors open. Such actions exposed the employee to avoidable risks.

HSENI stressed the importance of adhering to safety regulations, particularly when using equipment like lathes. Applying emery cloth directly by hand is prohibited due to risks including broken bones, dislocations, and amputations. Businesses are urged to prioritise safe machinery operation and ensure comprehensive safety protocols.

This case underscores the legal duty employers have to maintain a safe working environment and avoid unnecessary hazards. For more information about safety regulations and guidelines, visit HSENI’s website
