New guidance on managing fire safety on construction sites

The Construction Industry Advisory Committee (CONIAC) has issued new guidance on managing fire safety on construction sites.

The Committee has recently published fire risk management guidance based on the well-established principles of Plan, Do, Check and Act (PDCA) from HSG65 Managing for health and safety, and Appendix 4 of HSG168 Fire safety in construction.

For ease of reference, the dutyholder flow charts and table align with CITB’s CDM guidance colour coding. The guidance aims to help those with fire safety roles and responsibilities under The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM) to embed fire risk reduction measures from the design stage through to project completion.

The purpose of this guidance is to give a structured framework for decision making as well as to clarify roles and responsibilities for fire safety. The flowcharts and tables can be customised to fit the procedures of any organisation. CONIAC, on the other hand, claims that it is impossible to characterise every situation in a general flowchart and that fire risk management must be project- and site-specific.

All guidance on the CONIAC website has been produced by the industry to show good practice to help improve standards of health, safety and welfare in construction.
